Richert is able to create patterns as pleasing as arabesque designs that also carry the kind of intellectual weight you might expect to find at an MIT lab. You get the sense that what it took to make a Richert paintint is not just knowing something but believing in something, and his work delineates the kind of spiritual mission, creating transcendent meaning for a secular, industrial age that almost feels like an attempt to grasp the underlying structure of the cosmos. The patterns he creates seem to be simultaneously infinitessimally small and unfathomably vast. Though they are thoroughly rooted in the material reality of advanced knowledge, they carry the idealism of his modernist forebearers.
